Ratio and Proportion

Ratio and Proportion

In mathematics test Meena got 80marks and Rosy got 60 marks We can compare these marks in two ways.
Comparison by difference: The difference between the two marks is 80-60 =20. We say that Meena got 20 marks more than Rosy.

Comparison by division: We can also say that the marks obtained by Meena are (80/60)

The two numbers between which a ratio is expressed are called the terms of the ratio. That of which the ratio is expressed is written first and is called the antecedent. That in comparison with which the ratio is expressed is written after it and is called the consequent.

Facts about Ratio

1. The ratio between two quantities is obtained by dividing the first quantity by the second
2. The ratio is a number and has no unit.
3. The ratio is expressed in the simplest form.
4. The ratio is initing in the quantifies the same unit of measurement, if they do not have the same unit they should be changed into the same unit of measurement.

Proportion
A proportion is an equation that states that two ratios are equal. We may read the proportion 2:5 =8:20 as “2 is to 5 as 8 is to 20”.
